Finland 2014 pt.2

day 6: (mon)
To Lapland we ride!
But first, we stop by in Kemi and in Tornio (man, it was so drafty there that day. I compared it to the isle of the wind in Zelda's Phantom Hourglass ;) ) and then arrived in Rovaniemi.
Our wonderful, wonderful hotel for tonight is located on Ounasvaara, located opposite to the city centre. We've read before it might have one of Finland's best restaurants, and - yes! To me, it was!
View from our hotel-rooftop:

We spend our time outside and time flies by.
This near to the polar circle, the sun seems to stay with us all night, though midsummer still is a few days ahead. Already quite a magical night!
And well deserved:
distance Oulu - Rovaniemi: ~230km

day 7: (tue)
somehow I wish, we could have stayed longer in Rovaniemi, but on the other hand, we're also looking forward to Kuusamo. Maybe we would finally have the chance to see a bear?
But first, we visit the city centre of Rovaniemi and the Arcticum. This is a great muesum!

Different exhibitions on Sami people, the polar-circle and so much more! Unfortunately, we're a bit in a hurry, because we also have another place on our list to stop by: Santa Claus!
Well, people who know me also know I'm some kind of a christmas-grinch, so I am more interested in reaching the polar-circle than meeting Santa ;)

Quite surreal feeling, standing in a cool breeze in the sun in june, watching reindeer and listening to x-mas-songs. Back into the car!
Before reaching our destination, we stop by at a gas station. Lucky us: there we're told about a beautiful place nearby on our route which we might want to check out. And we did, otherwise we had missed this wonderful Finland-highlight: Auttiköngäs (köngäs = waterfall). Thereby is a wonderful hiking trail, providing you with information about the area (and yes, Mr. Brown Bear lives here! We're on his track!). Beautiful experience, thanks a lot, gas-station-man! :D

Still not enough beautiful nature, we go for a midnight walk in Kuusamo.

distance Rovaniemi - Kuusamo: ~190km

day 8: (wed)
Oulanka National Park is calling us! We look out for an interesting, not too demanding (hey, we're here to enjoy the landscape, not for doing sports ;) ) hiking route and find the Hiiden hurmos trail to be the right one for us. Perfect!

From time to time the idea strikes me, this might be one of the best places in the world. A part of me wants to stay here forever (or at least a few more hours, please). But we have to break away from this little paradise, because we also want to check out Ruka, located south of the national park.
Ruka seems to be a place-to-be for winter sports, but also in summer it's a nice place for hiking. Here, we choose the more demanding route around Ruka to get a glimpse of the ski-jump there.

And yes, it is really quite demanding, but you can go downhill at the end of the track by summer sled track, it's the longest in Finland!

day 9: (thu)
Finally, the honeypaw awaits! South of Kuusamo, the predator-rescue-centre (suurpetokeskus) enables us to see wolves, bears, fox, lynx and - most dangerous - reindeer! Impressive!
When you're there, stop by and support the centre!
No other halts on our trip this day, we arrive at Kajaani quite early. We're a bit exhausted from our hiking-days before, so we only take a short walk through the city.
no pictures today, boooooooring! ;)
distance Kuusamo - Kajaani: ~250km

day 10: (fri)
Already leaving Kajaani in the direction of Joensuu.

And we have another national park in sight: Koli. Of course, there's a lot to say about this place, but I'll let the images speak for themselves:

we spend most of the day here, in the evening we reach Joensuu.
distance Kajaani - Joensuu: ~230km

Finland 2014 pt.1

Since I seem to have some readers abroad and also to improve my language skills, I'll be writing this text in English. Corrections are always welcome :)
And, to get along in Finland without being able to speak finnish, english is a good way.

We spent our summer holidays in Finland this year!
some statistics on our road trip:
southernmost city: Helsinki - northernmost: Rovaniemi.
km driven: about 3000
route: Helsinki - Turku - Pori - Kokkola - Oulu - Rovaniemi - Kuusamo - Kajaani - Joensuu - Mikkel - Helsinki
15 days (11.-25.o6.)

day 1: (wed)
By ferry we arrive in Helsinki and take the road straight to Turku. The weather's really nice to us, and so we make our way to the archipelago in our summer clothes. Since we are not interested in hopping on another ferry to reach the other little islands, we park our car and have a nice, relaxing afternoon in the sun on a rocky beach with almost no other people around.

Time goes by and so we head back for a short walk in the city by the river. Though quite a lot of people are busy here, the atmosphere is still relaxed. I get a feeling, these holidays are going to be great ones!
distance Helsinki - Turku: ~170km

day 2: (thu)
Turku time!
Finland's oldest city has quite a story to tell, so we walk over to Turunlinna. This more than 700 year old castle provides information on Turku, medival Finland's connection to the rest of the world and life in general at these times. It seems to be bigger on the inside, so there really is a lot to be seen. On our way back, we also visit the pharmacy museum (this might be more vested interest: I work at a pharmacy) nearer to the city centre. This place offers more than a historical view on pharmacy, it also has preserved a town house from the 18th century. Beautiful antique furniture can be admired here, so lovely!
Just a short walk from there, the dome of Turku is located. And still there is so much more to see, but not for us today. We have ourselfs a relaxing evening.

day 3: (fri)
We're leaving Turku in the direction of Pori.
First stop: Askainen with castle Louhisaari, birthplace of C.G.E. Mannerheim. Our next stop is Uusikaupunki, where we just have a coffee and simply enjoy the ease.
We're recommended to visit Rauma with it's framehouses, and so we stop by there next and have a walk through the city. And then we're already in Pori. Quite a lazy day, but hey - we're on our holidays here ;)
distance Turku - Pori: ~150km

day 4: (sat)
Today's destination is Kokkola!

best weather, right?
We take a break at Kristiinankaupunki, where a village fair takes place. While lingerning around, we find Ulrika-Eleonora-church, so pretty from the inside with rokkoko-interior; but also offering an interesting view from the outside with it's steeple bending to the west.
(yeah, it's not so obvious in this picture. But just take a look at the sky! What a color!)
We drive on, passing Närpiö and Vaasa, and arrive at Pietasaari. When you're around in that area: Visit Fäboda! Why? See for yourself :)

But not only being lazy at the beach, Fäboda also offers the remarkable Nanoq Museum. I recommend to take the guided tour. I dind't knew I wanted to know so much about polarexpeditions. But I did. Excellent!
In the evening, we reach Kokkola. After our evening meal, we take an enjoyable walk around the city.

distance Pori - Kokkola: ~310km

day 5: (sun)
Heading to the white town of the north: Oulu.

There's a great place to check out: Hiekkasärkät, northernmost sand dunes.

ok, I won't bother you with more pictures, you get it already I assume ;)
It's not a secret I'm a big fan of finnish band "sentenced", so we decide to drive through Muhos before we reach Oulu (yes, man. I'm a fangirl. You didn't knew? You know now.).
And then Oulu. Unfortunately we're here on a sunday, we would have loved to spend an evening at the Nuclear Nightclub. So, the next morning we shop a little and then leave by now. Quite a pity, right?
distance Kokkola - Oulu: ~200km

kakao!

Was'n das eigentlich?

Naja... mal sehen, was draus wird, wa?!

Donnerstag, 29. Mai 2014

the paw is the law

Also... ne... irgendwie....
